Yellowstone Volcano have Bison running for their lives ?
A large super Yellowstone volcano lies within Yellowstone National Park and between a 4.8-magnitude earthquake last weekend and recent reports of animals fleeing the region, some people are worried there may be a pending eruption.
Assurances by Yellowstone officials and government geologists that the ancient super Yellowstone volcano beneath the park is not due to explode for eons have apparently done little to quell fears among the thousands who have viewed recent video postings of the thundering herd.
The 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck early Sunday near the Norris Geyser Basin in the northwest section of Yellowstone, which spans 3,472 square miles of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, caused no injuries or damages and did not make any noticeable alterations to the landscape, geologists said.
Though by seismic standards, it was the largest to rattle Yellowstone Volcano since a 4.8 quake in February 1980 it occurred near an area of ground uplift tied directly to the upward movement of molten rock in the super volcano. The mouth, or caldera, is 50 miles long and 30 miles wide.
Peter Cervelli, the associate director of science and technology at the U.S. Geological Surveys Volcano Science Center in California, neither this quake or the other hundreds that have struck near the gyser basin in the last seven months or the uplift suggest an eruption any sooner then tens of thousands of years away. However the fear of visiting Yellowstone Volcano any time soon seems to be rising with tourists.
“Yellowstone is one of the biggest supervolcanos in the world,” he said. “Sometimes it erupts quietly with lava flow, but once or twice every million years, it erupts very violently, forming large calderas.” stated Ilya Bindeman an associate professor of geological sciences at the University of Oregon.
